Asian America

This is a fairly popular online short movie about interracial dating between Asians and other races.  For those of you who keep up with the Asian independent film buzz, you’ve probably already seen this movie.  This movie, made by Wong Fu Productions, is entitled “Yellow Fever.”  Watch and enjoy!

Overall, despite the exaggerated humor, I do find this film’s subject to be very relevant and true.  While it’s not uncommon to find a Caucasian male coupled with an Asian female, it’s extremely rare to ever find an Asian male coupled with a Caucasian female.

Personally, I always wonder why this is the case.  Even though the movie presents its own batch of “theories”, one could obviously see that they’re not meant to be taken seriously.

However, a while ago, a co-worker of mine (who’s also Asian) presented an interesting theory.  This theory goes like this:

Most western women tend to be attracted towards men who easily express their emotional side and who tend to be naturally extroverted.  But because Asian males tend to be stereotyped as submissive, emotionally restrained, and introverted, many Caucasian women would shy away from coupling with them.

For Caucasian men, due to Western stereotype, Asian women are seen as exotic, inherently sexual (e.g. Geisha/“Dragon Woman” association) and naturally submissive, which are desirable attributes to them.

So, based on this theory, there are obvious reasons why this one-sided “yellow fever” phenomenon happens.

This, all in all, makes sense on many levels.  But what does everyone else out there think?
